Slip on a mask, float face-down over the lagoon, and a whole world opens up beneath you. The reefs around Efate are among the most pristine in the South Pacific — and the calm, sheltered waters near E'Nauwi Beach Resort make them some of the most accessible, too.

What you'll see beneath the surface
Efate's fringing reef teems with life. Expect to drift over:
- Vivid coral gardens in blues, purples and golds
- Clouds of tropical fish — clownfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish and more
- Giant clams tucked into the reef
- Sea turtles and rays gliding through the deeper channels
Because the lagoon is protected by reef, the water stays calm and clear — ideal for beginners, children and anyone who prefers gentle conditions over open ocean.
The lagoon's gentle giants
If you're very lucky, you may share the water with one of the lagoon's most special residents: the dugong. These gentle, slow-moving marine mammals — cousins of the manatee — graze on seagrass in shallow coastal waters. Dugong sightings are a rare privilege, as the species is endangered throughout much of its range, so spotting one is a moment you'll never forget. Always keep a respectful distance and never chase or touch them.

Snorkelling tips for first-timers
- Start in the shallows to get comfortable breathing through the snorkel.
- Float, don't fight — relax and let the water hold you; finning gently is enough.
- Never stand on coral — it's a living animal and easily damaged.
- Go with a buddy and keep an eye on the current and tide.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest to protect both your skin and the reef.
Snorkel straight from the sand
